Johannes Haase


Johannes Haase is an extremely versatile violinist, playing period, modern and electric instruments active on the improvised/jazz/contemporary music scene. He is known for his thrilling interpretations of contemporary music, his inventiveness in developing playing technics, use of effect pedals among violin players and interdisciplinary projects. In addition to his solo projects, Johannes is playing and touring with The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Basel Chamber Orchestra. He was a member of seminal funk band Nordic Skywalker and the broken Sticks and collaborates with Flowin Immo, the First Church of Free Music, the dorf, Absolute Ensemble New York, oh-ton ensemble, pianist Johanna Borchert, Ensemble New Babylon, indian Sitar maestro Imran Khan, Myotis Kollektiv, MAM.manufaktur für aktuelle Musik and most currently the violin-drum duo Scylla. He is a founder of Cologne-based Kommas Ensemble. In 2018 and 2019 Johannes was collaborating with Goethe Institut in Chile and India. He holds a Master degree in Free Improvisation from the music academy of Basel, Switzerland, having studied with Fred Frith. Furthermore, he has taken lessons and studied with Irvine Arditti, Ken Zuckerman, Thomas Klug, Igor Ozim and members of the Ensemble Modern; and with Kala Ramnath in Mumbai and Zach Brock and Ellery Eskelin in New York. In 2008 he won the John Cage Award (for the interpretation of new music), and in 2011 he was given the Klaus Huber-Sonderpreis from the University of Arts, Bremen. Johannes has given Masterclasses at Universities in South America and Asia and was an instructor for Junge Deutsche Philharmonie. Currently he is teaching Improvisation at the Academy of The Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. His plays a violin made by Stephan von Baehr (Paris, 2009) and a Violectra made by Dave Bruce Johnson (Birmingham, 2010).
